Background:
Abdullah Al Maliki was born in Syria 1971, and emigrated to Canada when he was young. Al Maliki is a dual citizen of Syria and Canada. Al Maliki is a computer engineer with a degree from Carleton University in Ottawa. He is married with five children, and ran a business exporting computer parts to customers in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. In 2002, Al Maliki returned to Syria to visit some relatives - the first time he had returned since he initially left. However, he was arrested upon arrival and held for two years on suspicion of being a security risk. It was reported that Al maliki was severely tortured in Syrian prisions. According to his brother, Youssef, during his time in jail, Al Maliki was hung by his hands, beaten and kept in a tiny cell. His experience has left him with post-traumatic stress disorder as well as injuries to his back, jaw, hip and feet. He was released in July 2004.
