Abdullah Al Maliki was born in Syria 1971, and emigrated to Canada when he was young.  Al Maliki is a dual citizen of Syria and Canada.

Al Maliki is a computer engineer with a degree from Carleton University in Ottawa.  He is married with five children, and ran a business exporting computer parts to customers in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

In 2002, Al Maliki returned to Syria to visit some relatives - the first time he had returned since he initially left.  However, he was arrested upon arrival and held for two years on suspicion of being a security risk.
