PRESS RELEASE: End of Detainee Inquiry an important step for survivors

The news that the UK Government's Detainee Inquiry will now come to an end is welcomed by CagePrisoners and those survivors of Guantanamo Bay.

The boycott that was carried out by a group of NGOs including CagePrisoners, Reprieve and eight others made the point that any judge-led inquiry at this time would be a farce while so much evidence was being kept in secret.

When the Inquiry was initially announced, both survivors and NGOs welcomed the news. We hope that if and when the Inquiry is recommissioned, it will redress the issues relating to its terms of reference and protocols, and will convene an Inquiry that is open and fair.

Moazzam Begg, Director of CagePrisoners and former Guantanamo detainee, said of the news,

"We are glad that an Inquiry that was set up to effectively provide impunity to the security agencies has now finally ended. For those of us who met the security agencies while in custody, we feel that we have the right to hear their evidence, as our treatment in Guantanamo was a direct result of their actions. We are looking forward to the day when we are able to say justice was done before the law, and that the security agencies were held responsible for their role in rendition and torture."
