PRESS RELEASE: Cageprisoners welcomes government announcement of torture inquiry
Reports today that indicate David Cameron has ordered a judge-led inquiry into allegations that British intelligence services were complicit in the torture and abuse of terrorism suspects are welcomed by Cageprisoners.
Claims of British complicity in torture have been abound since the first British prisoners returned from Guantanamo Bay in 2004. Since that time it has become evident that British intelligence services during the Blair administration have been complicit in the torture of numerous individuals around the world. Cageprisoners' Fabricating Terrorism II report highlighted 29 such cases - including British resident, Shaker Aamer, who remains in Guantanamo Bay after almost nine years without charge.
Cageprisoners director and former Guantanamo Bay prisoner, Moazzam Begg said:"We, the former prisoners of Guantanamo have been fighting our case in court for years - and the government has been fighting us right back. Therefore, we welcome this announcement and hope to see people who committed crimes against us finally accept culpability after persistent denials. We will however, never be satisfied as long as Shaker Aamer remains in Guantanamo with no recourse to basic rights or the rule of law."
