PRESS RELEASE: Sayfullah Ben Hassine released by new Tunisian government

Sayfullah Ben Hassine was imprisoned in 2003 and given a customarily long sentence without any evidence having been produced against him. Through a military court on the order of former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali Hassine was imprisoned to a term of 60 years in prison

News of his release following the revoution in Tunisia has been welcomed by his family and members of the community who knew Sayfullah Hassine to be an innocent man imprisoned for his politics and beliefs.

Cageprisoners Director Moazzam Begg said: "We welcome the news of the release of Sayfullah Ben Hassine whose family we have seen has suffered unimaginable without him for over seven years. I hope and pray the new Tunisian government will continue in its policy of releasing political prisoners and welcome back into freedom all its citizens who are either still held in Guantanamo, Bagram and those who were sent to Eastern Europe as part of the Guantanamo resettlements. I hope too that Tunisia now becomes a country where people can seek refuge in, instead of from."

Cageprisoners congratulates the family of Sayfullah Ben Hassine and the Tunisian people and calls on the new Government to seek the return and release of all its citizens held in US military custody - including those who were resettled in Europe.
