Shaker Aamer: husband, father and hostage

In war, numerous tactics are used to weaken the enemy with a view to its ultimate defeat. These range from bribery to insults, from ridicule and mockery to hostile propaganda, from threats of force to actual violence and expulsion. The precursor to all the above forms of persecution is a systematic process of dehumanisation.

Over the last few years, my friends and colleagues Jason Leopold and Jeffrey Kaye have been doing some excellent work for Truthout exposing the Bush administration’s torture program, and human experimentation at Guantánamo, and last week they produced another excellent article for Truthout, examining the significance of a recently released US military training manual for the development of George W. Bush’s torture program.

Yassine Ferchichi is a Tunisian national who faced persecution in his country of origin because of his religious practice. Fearing for his life, he eventually fled Tunisia after he was tortured by the security forces in 2005.

While much attention has been directed towards Guantanamo and the American “War on Terror”, the plight of Khader Adnan, a Palestinian detainee who carried out a 66 days and life threatening hunger strike, has given the opportunity to Palestinian prisoners to have their voices heard. In other words, he forced us to remember that other untold wars on Terror are taking place in the world, perhaps even more passively witnessed than the American one.

Last month was the 10th anniversary of the opening of the “war on terror” prison at Guantánamo, and as this year progresses it is appropriate to remember that there will be other grim 10-year anniversaries to note.

Saddek Sbaa

Background

Saddek Sbaa is a 24 year old man who was born in Morocco. He arrived in Netherlands at the age of five due to his father’s employment. He grew up in The Hague where he also studied to become a system operator and worked. In summer 2009, he went on holidays with three of his friends to visit Kenya. During their trip, they used tourist facilities and were guided by the local police.

Akhlas Akkhlak

Akhlas Akkhlak is a Russian citizen accused of being linked to the assassination attempt against the former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf in Rawalpindi on 25 December 2003. He was kidnapped by the Pakistani intelligence on the same month and was detained and tortured at a secret location. Despite many elements showing his innocence, he was awarded a death sentence by a military tribunal with no right to appeal.

Interview with Yassine Ferchichi

Yassine Ferchichi is a Tunisian national who fled persecution from his country of origin. He was arrested and sentenced in France on terrorism charges. His conviction was largely based on statements made by M’hamed Benyamina under torture in Algerian custody. In 2009, Yassine Ferchichi was deported to Senegal in opposition with a decision of the European Court of Human Rights. Since then, he has been living homeless without any legal document.
