Sunset Democracies

A short while after we were released Moazzam and I met in central London. I remember the day because I was still highly strung, watching everyone that potentially looked like a MI5 agent stalking us.
At the time, 2005, there had been a lot of talk about ‘sunset clauses’ on certain terrorism legislation in the House of Commons and I believe the Lords as well. I recall remarking to Moazzam, a fellow sufferer in Camp Echo, Guantanamo, that the UK, USA and the rest of the Western world have become ‘sunset democracies.’

What I meant was that whatever part of the ‘democratic system’ they had that brought about the more important aspect of justice, the ‘War on terror’ was robbing it away from the people. I also remarked that it looks like ‘democracy’ is rising in the East and setting in the West.

As Muslims we learn from this narration:

Mustaurid al-Qurashi reported: ‘I heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying:’

“The Last Hour would come (when) the Romans would form a majority amongst people.”

'Amr said to him (Mustaurid Qurashi): ‘See what you are saying?’ He said: ‘I say what I heard from Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him).’

Thereupon he said: ‘If you say that, it is a fact for they have four qualities. They have the patience to undergo a trial and immediately restore themselves to sanity after trouble and attack again after flight. They (have the quality) of being good to the destitute and the orphans, to the weak and, fifthly, the good quality in them is that they put resistance against the oppression of kings. (Muslim::Book 41:Hadith 6925)

Romans here can mean Caucasian ‘Europeans’, and their extensions such as Caucasian Australians and Americans.

So as Muslims we also learn that those who establish justice, even if they are not Muslim, Allaah will give them power on Earth. And those that do injustice, even if they are Muslim, Allaah will humiliate them.

Over the last six years I have come to many conclusions. The one I have held since reverting to Islam in 1999 is that we Muslims will have our Caliphate back by 2024 (one hundred years after we lost it approximately). The other is that we will not be united by Islam but rather by the enmity of our enemies. Another, more recently, is that the first ten years of the ‘War on terror’ was for the West, the next will be for us as the West suffers the consequences of their actions. All subject to the Will of Allaah of course.

Indeed what is happening in the Middle East right now and before that Iraq and before that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan I believe, due to this world view, are evidence enough of these observations.

What I however did not foresee, and troubling enough, is that this global intifada is because of food. But then again, once I returned and read Sun Tzu I should have known from the old Chinese saying, “Food is the heaven of the people”, and what the US soldiers use to say about the army: they will treat you bad but they won’t mess with your food or your letters from home.
