Some of the men have been held in prison since 1998 fighting controversial extradition requests by the USA or deportations to countries in the Middle East known to practice torture. Some of the men have been detained under various antiterror measures that have seen them detained without trial since 2002, released for a very short time under strict control orders after their imprisonment was ruled to be ‘unconstitutional’ and rearrested and imprisoned upon foreign extradition requests. None of the men have ever been charged, tried or convicted of any crime in the UK.
The isolation these men face in the ‘detainee unit’ has been devastating on their mental and physical health. The further attempt at curtail their basic right to congregational worship with fellow prisoners shows just how these basic human rights continue to be violated with impunity.
Cageprisoners urges everyone to contact the prison authorities and the Ministry of Justcie to ensure that these men, who have suffered so badly due to their demonization and are innocent according to the letter of the law, are not deprived of their right to religious freedom.
