We are making an urgent appeal to support Mohammed El Gharani—the youngest prisoner ever held in Guantánamo
Mohammed was born in Saudi Arabia to Chadian parents. He was seized from a mosque in Pakistan when he was only 14 and traded to the CIA in return for a considerable bounty. He was then rendered to Guantánamo, where he endured torture and other inhuman treatment throughout the remainder of his childhood and into early adulthood.
Mohammed won his Habeas Corpus hearing, proving his innocence, and was finally released in 2009 after seven years. However, rather than returning him to Saudi Arabia, where he was born and grew up and where his family still lives, he was released to Chad—a country he had never visited before—because of his Chadian nationality.
Now 24, Mohammed has spent the last two years trying to rebuild his life in Chad, an unfamiliar warzone, which is also one of the poorest countries in the world. He suffered from a host of severe medical problems resulting from his years of detention and torture. However, healthcare services in Chad are basically nonexistent. In the end Mohammed had to relocate to another African country in order to receive the treatment he needed.
Thankfully, Mohammed is now on the mend and for the first time since his release is living in a safe country where he is not at risk of harassment and abuse. However, he desperately needs help to get set up in his new home and to care for his wife and baby daughter whilst he orientates himself and then begins to look for work. We anticipate that this will take at least 3 months. Generous donors have already covered his accommodation costs, but he needs assistance to buy furniture, to pay for utilities and food for his family. We would really like to be able to help Mohammed have the new beginning he so very much deserves.
