Casablanca bombings, the day after

 

Nine years after Morocco experienced the deadliest attacks in its recent history, it has emerged that the country has played a central role in the Global War on terror. While the enthronization of a young king had given rise to much hope, those aspirations seem to have been written off by Morocco’s involvement in the gravest forms of mistreatment  in the guise of counter-terrorism.

The conventional view has been that, despite the express reference in Article 10 to the right “to receive … information” it does not give rise to any corresponding right of access to official information.  This view was expressed most clearly by the Court of Human Rights in the well-known case of Leander v. Sweden ((1987) 9 EHRR 433).  The the [sic] applicant complained of a violation of his Article 10 rights when refused confidential Government information relating to an unsuccessful job application.

Secrets at a Price

To refrain accountability, and continue its illegal global war, U.S. government officials have two walls to protect themselves behind: say secrecy, and propaganda/ psychological operations. When the first surround is penetrated, as Bradley Manning and WikiLeaks have done, and as justice Ellsberg did during the Vietnam era, it turns to propaganda, and psychological operations, (telling outright lies, spinning half-truths, character assassination, accusing others of treachery and wrong-doing).

Britain's security and intelligence services face legal action over misleading guidance issued to agents involved in the detention and interrogation of suspects who are at the risk of torture. The Equality and Human Rights Commission has written to David Cameron and the heads of MI5 and MI6 expressing "serious concerns" about the lawfulness of the guidance which it says leaves agents exposed to claims of complicity in torture.
